Dan grew up on a ranch in south central South Dakota near Colome. His dad was an auctioneer, appraiser, and real estate agent who raised both cattle and horses. The oldest of four children, Dan began working for the neighbors long before he could legally drive. He graduated from SDSU with a Bachelor of Animal Science degree and began his career with the Farmer’s Home Administration (FmHA) on June 6, 1986. In October of 1987, he became the County Supervisor in Leola, SD, and held the same position in Ipswich, SD beginning in January of 1990.
Dan was president of the SD Association of Credit Specialists when FmHA and ASCS merged in 1995. On April 1, 1996, Dan became one of the first County Executive Directors with loan approval authority in the nation managing both the farm loan and commodity programs of McPherson County for the newly formed organization that eventually became the Farm Service Agency (FSA). In that capacity, Dan also served on several national and state task forces. In July of 2007, Dan became a District Director overseeing the North Central part of the state ranging from Britton to McIntosh. In October of 2008, he transferred to Belle Fourche eventually overseeing the majority of western South Dakota. In 2016, Dan was selected as a national District Director mentor and has since mentored District Directors in 5 states. Dan retired from FSA at the end of 2021 with 35 ½ years of public service.
Dan hired, trained, and supervised agricultural loan officers along with overseeing the commodity, disaster, and conservation programs of FSA. During his time with FmHA, he had full real estate appraisal authority and was involved in both residential housing finance and construction. He fully understands agriculture and all aspects of finance. He has the experience, contacts, and skills to work through any problem that may arise. Whether agricultural, commercial, or residential activity, Dan’s customer service and communication skills will help you get the job done.
Dan and his wife, Brenda, live just outside of Belle Fourche where they raise registered quarter horses. They have sold horses in 28 states to date. Their stallion, Fiery French Whiskey, placed 7th in the AQHA Junior World Show in November of 2021. He also won the Best of the West Tie Down Futurity at the Black Hills Stock Show in both 2021 and 2022. Dan and Brenda have 3 grown children and 6 grandchildren.
